Prairie River Junior High School recognized its top academic students from last year during an awards ceremony Sept. 17. Principal Victor Fines emceed, inviting teachers to present the awards to students. Many students in Grades 7-9 received gold pins and plaques, while several Grade 7 students and one Grade 8 student received silver pins. Three students, one per grade, made the honour roll. Awards were given for outstanding performance in Grade 9 core subjects. Kylie Younghans was recognized for social studies, science and math, while Kashtin Auger was recognized for language arts. Receiving honourable mention was Jessica Rose. She came within a few percentage points for language arts and math. Special education teacher Liz Gardner presented the Kenny Bissell Award to Sydney Weststrate. This memorial award for $50 goes to a student enrolling in Grade 10. “These students need some kind of recognition,” says Gardner. “It’s important that they have their moment in the sun.” The school held an open house before the ceremony, with hamburgers and juice served in the lunchroom. Fines also announced Grade 9 students are planning an educational trip. It will be similar to the Grade 8 trip, but tailored more to the Grade 9 curriculum.
