The E.W. Pratt golf team overcame the odds to win silver medals at the Peace Zone High School Championships in Eaglesham Sept. 19-20.
Dylan Barrons, Quintin Guttinger and Justin Olansky faced pressure on each of the 36 holes golfed but came through with the medals during a fine exhibition of golf.
In the high school format, teams are allowed four members. The highest score on each hole is deleted. Spirit River won the title but had four golfers on their team meaning they could delete the highest score on each hole. It was not the case with Pratt, who had to use each score on each hole.
Team coach Vic Shapka was very pleased with his team’s effort.
“We had four rounds in the seventies,” says Shapka. “The boys golfed really well.”
Teams golfed 18 holes each day at the Lakeside Golf and Country Club. Spirit River’s team total of 229-237-466 was seven strokes better than Pratt’s 236-239-475.
While Pratt’s team won silver, Guttinger won individual bronze. He fired consecutive rounds of 76 for a 152 total. Barrons fired 76-85-161 while Olansky shot 84-78-162.
“(Barrons) shot 76 and 85, he had one bad hole,” says Shapka.
Guttinger was in Calgary earlier this week completing the provincial championships which began Sept. 29 and concluded Sept. 30, too late for press. The first 18 holes were at the Redwood Meadows Golf and Country Club, the second 18 at the Wintergreen Golf and Country Club.
“To be honest with you, Quintin has a really good chance to do well,” says Shapka. “He could be one of the top three in the province.”
And if Guttinger doesn’t do well, he will surely have another chance. Guttinger is in Grade 10 and has two more years to qualify.
Barrons is in Grade 12, Olansky Grade 11.
