It just keeps getting bigger and better each year!
A whopping 193 people registered for the 2008 High Prairie Fire Department Fire Chase Oct. 5 – by far the highest number in its five-year history.
The turnout has organizers eager to plan for next year already.
“The event was a huge success,” says organizer Lynne Pardell. “We had 193 registered participants and everyone seemed to have a great time.”
Each participant had a choice to take part in the five-kilometre or 10-kilometre run and/or walk.
“The five-kilometre is not just a leisurely stroll through the park,” says Pardell. “The top finishes ran five kilometres is under 20 minutes. It has become highly competitive.
In the five-kilometre walk, Eugene Nobert placed first in the male category in a time of 19:40.26 seconds while Drake Houssain was second just over two seconds later.
In the ladies category, Eileen Billard was first in 25:35.91 and sixth overall. Diane Lizotte was second in 25:43.92 seconds.
Zac Billard was first in the youth male category in 21:36.01 seconds and R.J. Conway second while Cathernie Marzotko was first in the youth female category in 34:01.59 seconds and Grace Pardell second.
Fraser Bjornson placed first in the men’s 10-kilometre portion in 40:38.34 seconds while Patrick Coppens was second.
Laverna Hards topped the ladies portion in 47:44.01 seconds with Becky Heemeryk second.
Fire Chase continues to grow in popularity each year because the format appeals to so many people. Coupled with many prizes, free snacks and refreshments and a live band, there is certainly something for everyone.
“I am very happy with how everything went,” says Pardell. “As always, our sponsors were amazing! I can’t wait to start planning next year’s run. I have already have started, actually!”
Fire Chase kicks off Fire Prevention Week and is held in part to raise awareness for the High Prairie Fire Department and encourage a healthy lifestyle. It also gives firefighters a chance to remind people of the importance of fire safety and prevention.
Every registrant received a long-sleeved shirt, snacks, and goodie bags. A free swim at the High Prairie Regional Aquatic Centre concluded the day.
