Alumni Regals still have the fire

Members of the High Prairie Regals alumni still have the fire to play hard.
They demonstrated this to player/coach Tyler Shantz’s younger team Oct. 18, scoring two power play goals and maintaining strong forechecking throughout the game. Shantz’s team won 17-11, but he thinks highly of the alumni.
“I grew up watching these guys. It was really a pleasure to get to play with them. They really move the puck around good and I think we can learn something from them,” says Shantz. He hopes the alumni game becomes an annual event.
The alumni consisted of two groups and the first group played for the first period only. Rick Dumont played with the first group and he found the game physically demanding but enjoyable.
“It felt good and the fact was I only had to play one period, so it’s even better. We held our own for us old guys,” says Dumont. He also praises Shantz’s team.
“They’re big and fast. I think they’ll have a good team this year, it looks like Tyler has them going in the right direction.”
Dumont played for the Regals for 15 years and coached for three years.
To Wayne Stafford, it was great to get back into a Regals jersey for the first time since the 1978/79 season.
“Whenever you wear the Regals jersey, you always think back to those 30 years and think of all the good times you had and all the fun times,” says Stafford.
Nineteen jerseys were auctioned in the curling rink lounge after the game. This raised $4,900, of which $500 will go to the CT Scan unit and the rest for the team’s budget.
The Regals play their first home game at 8:30 p.m. Oct. 25 against the Lakeland Eagles. They open the NPHL season one night earlier in Peace River.
