The High Prairie and District Food Bank needs the community’s help to fill its shelves.
It is low on pastas, rice and children’s lunch items like juice boxes, peanut butter, jam and puddings.
“We are constantly low on these things,” says Kim Dumont, the food bank coordinator. “We know that the kids would have a good lunch (if we can get these items).”
The food bank receives donations from the Edmonton Food Bank and the Alberta Food Bank Network Association. However, they cannot provide these items in large quantities because they have to meet their needs, says Dumont.
Richard Le Sueur, resource development coordinator for the AFBNA in Edmonton, says the food bank received approximately 28,000 pounds (12,700 kg) of food through National Food Share in 2007. Dumont says this is about right, as they send four or more shipments per year.
The food bank has local support such as Freson IGA, which donates bread weekly and Dumont appreciates this.
Need fluctuates monthly, but the food bank provided 345 food hampers as of Oct. 20. Christmas is one of the busiest times of the year. However, a Katimavik volunteer will be working there for nine months so this should help Dumont with the holiday.
She welcomes food and financial donations year round. For more information, please call 780-523-5777.
