The Labour Market Information Centre held Canada Career Week Nov. 12-14, giving people the opportunity to ask questions about career and education planning. The LMIC is located in the provincial government building. “We have different tools that we use (such as) resume writing software. We’re also bringing in people … to answer questions about their particular occupations,” says Marilyn Lacoste, a youth career advisor with Youth Connections. Dan Brault, a senior probation officer for the Solicitor General, Community Corrections in High Prairie, discussed the criteria for his occupation. “They have to enjoy working with people and must be patient,” he says. “They must have good written and verbal skills. They should have good common sense and no criminal record.” He adds there is a difference between parole officers and probation officers. The parole officer works for the federal government and supervises people released on parole. The probation officer works for the provincial government and supervises programs like the fine option program for youth and adults. They also prepare court reports and reports for the jails. He adds probation officers must act professionally at all times, even in their private lives. A diploma is the minimum required to work as a probation officer, which can be obtained after completing a two-year program at a post-secondary institution. Bianca Auger is upgrading her education and is thinking about a career in corrections. “I’m really good with people and I have a lot of confidence in myself.” She likes working with youth and has a lot of experience with them. She asked Brault several questions as part of her research. Other employers were at Canada Career Week. The LMIC has resources for career planning, resume writing, job search assistance, occupational profiles, a job board etc. The job board has listings for hospitality/retail, labourers, trades, operators/truck driver, office administration, hospital/health fields and teacher/support worker.
