Archie Cunningham wants to keep busy in retirement, so he has accepted an appointment to Northern Lakes College’s board of governors. Cunningham, a resident of Peavine Metis Settlement, worked for the college for 30 years and retired June 30. He worked on behalf of the college’s president with education committees, First Nations groups and Metis settlements and communities in the far north. Now, in his new role, he sees exciting times ahead for the college. “I think the college is in the process of growing,” says Cunningham. “I look forward to being on the board of governors for Northern Lakes College because these are exciting times. Northern Lakes College is second to none and offers quality programs and they do it in a very unique way. Cunningham says some programs can be taken at home through distance education and the college offers two-year university transfer programs. He also says efforts are being made to re-capitalize campuses in some communities and he supports a new campus in High Prairie. “There’s already been a considerable amount of work towards that. The president (Rick Neidig) has really been on this for quite some time planning it. I think we continue to strive and … work with the government and other interest groups to build a campus in High Prairie. That’s what we’ve got to try and do.” Besides working for Northern Lakes College, Cunningham served on the Peavine Metis Settlement council in the early 1990s and coached minor hockey and minor baseball in High Prairie.
