Local peewee hockey teams faced some strong competition recently.
The High Prairie Minor Hockey Association held a peewee tournament Nov. 28-30, dividing the teams into “A” and “B” sides.
For the “A” side, the teams consisted of the High Prairie Buchanan Lumber Blades, the Manning Kal Tire Peewees, Spirit River Rangers and Tofield Titans. On the “B” side were the High Prairie GEM Gladiators, Beaverlodge, Fairview Lions and Peace River Record-Gazette Renegades.
The Blades had a 1-2 record during the tournament, losing 10-2 to the Rangers, winning 8-7 against the Kal Tire Peewees and then losing 10-7 against the Titans.
The Gladiators lost 6-4 to the Renegades, won 3-1 against Beaverlodge and tied 5-5 with the Lions. Nonetheless, they advanced to the “B” final against the Renegades.
However, Gladiators goalie Davis Isaac had it tough, letting in five unanswered goals in the first period alone. The Renegades’ Jordan Wald scored two goals, while Romono Carifelle, Jayden Gorham and Riley Potts scored one goal each.
Although they didn’t score any goals in the second period, the Gladiators were strong on the forecheck and power play opportunities, including a 5-on-3 late in the period.
But they continued into a downward spiral early in the third period, as Carifelle and Wald each scored a goal for the Renegades.
Yet, the Gladiators got a much-needed boost near the 10-minute mark, as Lindsay Bowman scored a shorthanded goal with assistance from Dakota Auger and Josh St. Cyr.
The Renegades won the game 7-1 and took the High Prairie Peewee “B” Champions trophy.
Sandford Gauchier, the Gladiators coach, downplayed the Renegades win.
“The competition was really good,” says Gauchier. “Unfortunately, the final game wasn’t really indicative of that. Peace River jumped on us with five goals right off the hop. Other than that, it would have been a 2-1 game.”
He also says the players were pretty excited right off the hop and were laying the body pretty good, too. But they couldn’t get their focus back into the game when the Renegades were up by a couple of goals.
“We ended up running it around a little bit too much and Peace River made us pay for it,” he says
The coaches have to make sure their players don’t get too hyped up before the final game. The team will be fine if this happens, he adds.
The Rangers and Titans played in the “A” championship game. The Rangers won a hard-fought game 5-4 and took the High Prairie Peewee “A’ Champions trophy.
