Members of Peavine Métis Settlement have shown their generosity by donating $1,500 to cancer patient Georgette Chalifoux.
Blair Cunningham organized the Journey for Hope which took place in Peavine Nov. 2. Starting and ending at the community centre, 52 people biked, ran, rollerbladed or walked for three, five or 10 kilometres. He presented a cheque to her daughter, Sharpy Chalifoux, during the Christmas dinner at the community hall Dec. 15.
“It’s a great help to her,” she says. “It gives her that bit of financial comfort.”
Her mother could not attend because she was too tired. However, she is grateful to everyone who raised money.
“It was a really big surprise,” says Chalifoux. “I really appreciate all the help I have received from the community, Aboriginal Head Start and Peavine Bishop Routhier School.”
Aboriginal Head Start and the school held their own fundraising event Oct. 27. She attended a ceremony in the school gym Nov. 19 and principal Bruce Joudrey presented her $2,100 in cash on behalf of both groups.
In January 2008, Chalifoux learned she has cancer in her left lung. A PET (positron emission tomography) scan at the Cross Cancer Institute in Edmonton Aug. 19 determined it has grown in five places.
However, she will be receiving chemotherapy in Peace River soon.
