Don Lui and his wife, Rebecca Kong, are enthusiastic about their new business venture in High Prairie, Don’s Kitchen, which offers Western and Chinese cuisine. The business, located across from the post office, opened in mid-December. He handles the kitchen and she works out front. “I like cooking and my father was a cook, too,” says Lui. They are originally from Hong Kong, where he learned to cook and owned a restaurant. She worked in Edmonton for a time, but went back to Hong Kong and worked for her parents. She met him at a restaurant there and they later came to Alberta. They worked in Edmonton for five years, then moved to High Prairie because they thought the community was a good place to start a new business. Besides a takeout menu, they offer items like crispy garlic chicken, pastas, barbecued pork, fried rice and noodles as well as club sandwiches. One of their specialties is dim sum, a Chinese dumpling. According to Wikipedia, traditional dim sum includes various types of steamed buns such as cha siu baau, dumplings and rice noodle rolls (cheong fun), which contain a range of ingredients, including beef, chicken, pork, prawns and vegetarian options. In Hong Kong and most cities and towns in Guangdong province, many Chinese restaurants start serving as early as five in the morning. It is a tradition for the elderly to gather to eat dim sum after morning exercises, often enjoying the morning newspapers. Don’s Kitchen offers dinners for two, three and four people and will eventually expand to handle private parties. The restaurant is open Monday thru Friday, 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., Saturday 11 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. and closed Sundays.
