Figure skaters bring home 15 medals including nine gold: High Prairie Skating Club members are showing the fruits of their labour this winter as the competition season progresses. On Feb. 7-8, the Drayton Valley Skating Club hosted the NorthWest/Peace Region Funmeet. This year, 13 skaters from the High Prairie Skating Club attended and brought home 15 medals including nine gold. The next big event on the calendar is a Low Test Day in High Prairie Feb. 22. Local skaters are eagerly anticipating the event and hope to bring home many more medals. Fans of figure skating are reminded March 7 at 6:30 p.m. is the club’s annual Ice Carnival. This year’s theme is ‘So You Think You Can Dance - High Prairie?’

Marie Ochran won three medals including a gold as a member of the Introductory Team - Flight B. She also won silver medals in the Primary Freeskate - Flight A and Pre-Preliminary Creative - Flight A events.

Kelsey Keay won three gold medals. Events she won included the Introductory Freeskate - Flight A, Introductory Elements - Flight A, and as a team member on the Introductory Team - Flight B.

Kerry Gardner won three gold medals. Events she won included the Introductory Freeskate - Flight B, Introductory Elements - Flight C, and as a team member on the Introductory Team - Flight B.

Allyson Gauchier won three gold medals. Events she won included the Introductory Freeskate - Flight D, Introductory Elements - Flight E, and as a team member on the Introductory Team - Flight A.

Kate Ochran won two medals including a gold and silver. Her gold came as a member of the Preliminary Team – Flight A team. She also won silver in Preliminary Freeskate - Flight B. Ochran has skated with the club for many years and is looking forward to the annual Carnival.

Rae-Ann Gill won a gold and bronze medal. Her gold came as a member of the Introductory Team - Flight B while her bronze was won in the Canskate Program - Flight A.

Samantha Laboucan won a gold, silver and bronze medal at the competition. She won her gold as a team member in Preliminary Team - Flight A. She won her silver in Pre-Preliminary Freeskate - Flight A and her bronze in Pre-Preliminary Creative - Flight B.

Kennedi Strebchuk won a gold medal as part of the club’s Introductory Team - Flight A. She also placed fourth in the Preliminary Solo Dance - Flight B, sixth in the Pre-Preliminary Creative - Flight A, and seventh in the Introductory Freeskate - Flight D.

Hailey Gardner won a gold medal as part of the club’s Introductory Team - Flight A. She also placed sixth in Introductory Elements - Flight A, and Introductory Creative - Flight A. The club’s teams all enjoyed a strong showing at the meet.

Lindsey Keay placed fifth in the Canskate Elements Stage 4A event. Like many skaters, she is looking forward to future competitions and the club’s annual Ice Carnival March 7 at 6:30 p.m. at the Sports Palace. Everyone is welcome to attend.

Rhiane Jamieson won a gold medal as part of the club’s Preliminary Team -Flight A team. She also placed fourth in the Preliminary Freeskate - Flight B event. She thoroughly enjoys skating with the club as her smile indicates.
