A few residents at J.B. Wood Extended Care Unit will be little more comfortable, thanks to a donation from the High Prairie Lions Club.
The Lions have purchased three beds for J.B. Wood, each valued at about $1,750.
But these aren’t your normal beds. Each can recline to the resident’s desire and each is equipped with a lift for the convenience of residents and staff.
Elaine Demeule, continuing care manager at J.B. Wood, spoke to Lions member Colleen McAloon last year. McAloon took Demeule’s request back to the club and it was approved.
High Prairie Lions president John Dunn and Demeule agreed the donation was needed.
“The beds do so much, it helps for healing and its helps the caregiver,” says Dunn.
Demeule adds the beds can lower so close to the floor they alleviate falls.
Dunn is pleased the Lions could help.
“The reality is the community gives to us,” he says. “It’s a way of giving back to the community, so we have to thank everyone in the community.”
And, since many early pioneers are residents of J.B. Wood, it is appropriate to give to them since they have given so much.
“I was very ecstatic,” says Demeule upon receiving the news the beds would be purchased. “I was touched by their generosity. That’s amazing.”
J.B. Wood has 35 residents and two respite beds.
Demeule says more beds are needed.
“We need a lot but it’s a good start for us,” she says. “It’s an awesome start.”
Dunn says the Lions will consider any request presented to them but can’t promise each will be approved.
The Lions also contribute to the Summer Play Program and maintain the Lions Tot Lot in the High Prairie’s east end.
