The ad hoc committee interested in forming a Junior “B” hockey team in High Prairie continues to seek information about entry into the Northwest Junior Hockey League.
Rick Dumont received some information from the NWJHL Feb. 25 about the requirements and he has to meet with the committee to determine if a franchise is worth pursuing.
“I’m going to take this information to the ad hoc committee in the very near future. We’ll decide whether this is feasible or not,” says Dumont.
He also says the committee has to do a lot of things, such as consider the fees and determine whether the ice time is available. However, he is optimistic there is strong interest in a High Prairie team.
“We’re looking at it seriously and still getting a lot of support from all the neighbouring communities. All the people on the committee are very excited about it. I’ve heard lots of talk around town about what a good thing that would be for this area and I’m hoping we can make it work.”
All the documentation and other requirements must be in place before the NWJHL’s annual general meeting in Grande Prairie May 23, which is when the committee would make its sales pitch to the board.
Besides Dumont, the committee consists of Raymond Carifelle, Kelly Cunningham, Iner Gauchier, Layne Gauchier, Hector Lamouche, Ken Matthews, Robert Olansky and James Waikle. They held their first meeting at the town office Jan. 19.
