The True Value Atom ‘A’ Thrashers were victorious against the Grande Prairie Atom ‘A’ Saints March 21, winning 7-2 and taking the Atom ‘A’ Tier 2 North Champions banner.

The Thrashers won the two-game total goal series 12-8, after losing the first game in Grande Prairie one week earlier, but they dominated with strong forechecking and two goals in the first period.

Larkin Stokes put the Thrashers on the board five minutes in, with Ryley LaRiviere and Kyle Cairns assisting. Austin Doan scored the second goal four minutes later, with Theoren Cunningham assisting.

Kyle Cairns could have made it three goals as the period ended. He had the puck on a breakaway opportunity and took a shot, but goalie Cody Bennett’s defensive posture denied him his prize. It was 2-1 for the Thrashers at the end of the first period.

The Saints came back early in the second period when Dylan Small put the puck in the attic with Madison Vallee assisting.

However, the Thrashers regained their momentum late in period when Theoren Cunningham scored with assistance by Blake Cisaroski and Jimmy Delorme. Then, denied his goal in the first period, Kyle Cairns flicked the puck in with Jeremy Filion assisting to give the Thrashers a 4-1 lead.

Dylan Gardner widened the lead for the Thrashers when he scored an unassisted goal just 20 seconds into the third period. Then Larkin Stokes flicked the puck high into the net near the eight-minute mark and Kyle Cairns assisted.

Darby Berg scored the Saints’ second and last goal late in the period with assistance by Joshua Boomgaarden and Dawson Paul.

But the Thrashers had the last word when Dylan Gardner put the puck in the attic with Kyle Cairns assisting, giving the team a 7-2 win.

Coach John Stokes is proud of his team.

“The kids all played well,” says Stokes. “They showed up to play hard and they did. They wanted it.”

He also commends the team for their good attitudes and team work.

Rob Webb, the Saints coach, says his team just came up flat.

“We just didn’t have it,” says Jebb, adding it has been a battle for both teams all season.

The two-game total goal series victory marked the end of the season for the Thrashers.
