Poloz wins Closing Mixed Bonspiel title

Bernie Poloz won the High Prairie Curling Club’s Closing Mixed Bonspiel March 20-21 after defeating Bob Heyde 9-2 in the A Event final. Jim Zabolotniuk’s Monahan Ford rink won the B Event after defeating McLennan’s Kevin Laliberte 8-3 and Perry Brust won the C Event after defeating Al Butterfield 10-2 in the C Event final. Ten rinks entered this year’s bonspiel.


Bernie Poloz won the A Event after defeating Bob Heyde 9-2. Poloz scored two in the third end to take a 4-2 lead. He then proceeded to steal one in the fourth and two in the sixth and seventh ends to complete the game. Rink members, left-right, are skip Bernie Poloz, third Laura Poloz, second Jesse Smith and lead Brenda Stafford.


Jim Zabolotniuk’s Monahan Ford rink won the B Event with an 8-3 win over McLennan’s Kevin Laliberte. Zabolotniuk scored two points with the hammer in the third end to take a 4-2 lead. He then stole four in the fourth end to put the game away. Laliberte did score one in the fifth and stole one in the sixth before shaking hands. Rink members, left-right, are skip Jim Zabolotniuk, third Lisa Zabolotniuk, second Pat Monahan and lead Tammy Monahan.


Perry Brust won the C Event with a 10-2 win over Al Butterfield. Brust scored four points in the first end before giving up two in the second. He added four more in the third, then stole two in the fourth and the rinks shook hands. Rink members, left-right, are skip Perry Brust, third Lori Zabolotniuk, second Dave Zabolotniuk and lead Connie Brust.

Poloz wins fourth straight Men’s title

Bernie Poloz’s rink won its fourth straight High Prairie Curling Club Men’s League title with a 5-3 win over David Marx’s rink in the A Event final March 24. Poloz never trailed in the game after blanking the first end. Jim Zabolotniuk’s Monahan Ford rink won the B Event and Bob Heyde the C Event. Heyde’s victory came in an extra end over Robert Benoit.


Bernie Poloz’s rink scored two in the second end to take a 2-0 lead over David Marx’s rink, skipped by Peter Keay in his absence. Marx’s rink was also without Myler Savill, who also skips alternately with Marx, so they played the game with three curlers. Keay scored one in the third end but Poloz rallied with two in the fourth and one in the fifth to lead 5-1. Keay did score two in the sixth end to close the gap to 5-3 but called it quits after his first rock in the seventh. Rink members, left-right, are skip Bernie Poloz, third Vic Shapka, second Jesse Smith and lead John Chapman.


Jim Zabolotniuk’s Monahan Ford rink won the B Event after defeating Kay Savill 7-2 in six ends. Savill scored first but Zabolotniuk scored two in the second end to lead 2-1. He stole one point in the third end to lead 3-1. The rinks traded points the next two ends before Zabolotniuk scored three in the sixth to lead 7-2. The rinks then shook hands. Rink members, left-right, are skip Jim Zabolotniuk, third Lyndon Drefs, second Pat Monahan and lead Phil Pardell.


Bob Heyde’s rink won the C Event with a 6-5 extra end win over Robert Benoit. Heyde scored two in the third end to erase a 2-0 deficit to tie the game. Later, he scored two in the sixth end to erase a 4-3 deficit to lead 5-4. However, Benoit blanked the seventh end and scored a single point in the eighth end to tie the game and send it into an extra end. Heyde took advantage of last rock to win the game 6-5. Rink members, left-right, are skip Bob Heyde, third Gary Adams and lead Wayne Stafford. Lead Robert Chelick was missing having been recently transferred to Spirit River so Heyde played the final game with only three curlers.

Poloz wins eighth Mixed title in 10 years

Bernie Poloz won the High Prairie Curling Club Mixed League title March 25 after defeating Boy Heyde 5-2 in the A Event final. The match pitted winners of the last nine mixed club titles against each other. Heyde won the previous two years in 200-7-08 to end Poloz’s run of seven straight titles from 1999-2006. Al Butterfield won the B Event and Tim McGrath the C Event.


Bernie Poloz won the A Event with a 5-2 win over Bob Heyde. It was one of the rare curling games that saw single points scored in seven straight ends before the rinks shook hands. The difference was Poloz was able to steal points in the fourth and seventh ends while Heyde was unable to steal during the game. Poloz also scored in the first, third and sixth ends while Heyde scored in the second and fifth ends. Rink members, left-right, are skip Bernie Poloz, third Laura Poloz, second Jesse Smith and lead Brenda Stafford.


Al Butterfield’s rink outscored Audrey Shapka 7-6 to win the B Event. Butterfield scored two in the first, three in the third and stole one in the fourth to lead 6-2 but Shapka rallied with single points in the fifth and sixth ends before stealing two in the seventh to tie the game. Butterfield used last rock to his advantage to win 7-6. Rink members, left-right, are skip Al Butterfield, third Maureen Butterfield, second Cory Whalen and lead Cristy Whalen.


Tim McGrath’s rink won the C Event with a 7-5 win over Gary Adams. Adams stole three in the third end to lead 4-1 but McGrath battled back with two in the fourth and stole one in the fifth to tie the game 4-4. Adams took the lead in the sixth with one point after McGrath executed a perfect triple takeout. McGrath scored two in the seventh to lead 6-5 coming home. Adams faced a very difficult shot with his last stone and couldn’t capitalize thereby letting McGrath steal one point to win 7-5. Rink members, left-right, are skip Tim McGrath, third Terry Hogan, second Andrew Hogan and lead Rachel Begley.

Savill tops Ladies League

The High Prairie Curling Club ended its season March 26 after the Ladies League concluded play. Kay Savill won the A Event with a 6-3 win over Maureen Butterfield; Nadean Crooks won the B Event with a 7-6 extra end win over Marilyn Stevens; Jocelyn Heyde won the C Event with an 8-4 win over Lisa Zabolotniuk. Crooks executed a perfect and difficult shot with her last stone in the extra end to win the game – a fitting way for the club to end its season.


Kay Savill’s rink won the A Event with a 6-3 win over Maureen Butterfield. Savill trailed 2-0 after two ends but scored two in the third to tie the game. After trading points in the next two ends, Savill scored two in the sixth end to lead 5-3. She stole a single point in the seventh, then ran Butterfield out of rocks in the eighth and final end to win. Rink members, left-right, are skip Kay Savill, third Carole Basarab, second Becky Turcotte, lead Pat Billings and sub Rhona Ragan. Ragan subbed for Billings in the final game.


Nadean Crooks’ rink won the B Event with an extra end 7-6 win over Marilyn Stevens. Stevens scored three in the first and stole one in the second to lead 4-0. However, Crooks scored two points in the next two ends to tie the game, then stole one in the fifth to lead 5-4. Stevens tied the game in the sixth after drawing to the button while facing three. The rinks traded points in the next two ends setting up the extra end. Rink members, left-right, are skip Nadean Crooks, third Diane Quartly, second Jackie Lind and lead Jeanelle Lund.


Jocelyn Heyde’s rink won the C Event with an 8-4 win over Lisa Zabolotniuk. Heyde scored three in the first end to take the early lead. She then stole one in the second and two in the third to lead 6-0. Zabolotniuk scored three in the fourth end to close the gap to 6-3 but Heyde limited her to a single point the rest of the way. Rink members, left-right, are skip Jocelyn Heyde, third Rose Decorby, second Brenda Stafford and lead Rachel Mount.
