Junior B interim executive formed

An interim executive has been formed to bid for a Junior B franchise in High Prairie, for entry into the Northwest Junior Hockey League.

Mayor Rick Dumont made the announcement during the town council meeting March 25.

“We’ve decided to proceed and try get a team for High Prairie and area,” says Dumont. “We had to form an interim executive and I’ve been elected president.”

Raymond Carifelle of Peavine Métis Settlement is the vice-president. Other members include Bob Calhoon, Hector Lamouche, Robert Olansky and Roderick Willier. The position of secretary-treasurer must be filled.

Dumont requested and received a letter of support from council for the executive and the High Prairie and District Regional Recreation Board must issue a letter for ice time.

Also, fundraising letters are being drafted for Carifelle and Lamouche to raise the $4,075 required to enter the league.

Everything has to be ready for the NWJHL’s annual general meeting in Grande Prairie May 23.

“We want to have all our ducks in a row and everything done by then, to make the pitch that day,” says Dumont.

All the schools will participate in a contest to name the team if the bid is accepted.

Dumont hopes the team will be ready to play in September. He says the Sexsmith Vipers team has folded, while the Grande Prairie Wheelers team is in “jeopardy.”

“It’s probably a good opportunity for us to step in,” says Dumont.

The first meeting was held in the town council chamber Jan. 19 to determine if there was sufficient interest. Dumont and his group have also held meetings with the NWJHL board of directors to address the criteria for entry.
