A $520,000 incentive for housing construction

High Prairie Mayor Rick Dumont, right, presents a cheque for $520,000 to Floyd Becker for lot improvements in the Cornerstone Residential Development. It will be divided for 26 lots, at $20,000 per lot. Becker, who runs Spanwest Ventures in Prince Albert, Sask., is partnering with Joe Remai of CRD to develop the lots. They have brought in Keith Mackenzie, president of Calgary-based Global West Developments and Bill Baumel, his partner, to build two houses initially. Mackenzie says construction could start May 15, depending on the weather. He also says they will use as much local labour and materials as possible. The Town of High Prairie borrowed the $520,000 from the Alberta Capital Finance Authority as an incentive to develop the lots. Becker credits the mayor, CAO Larry Baran and development officer Heather Ferguson for making it possible. The Town is imposing a local improvement charge on each lot to recoup the money.

Legion latest to donate

The High Prairie Royal Canadian Legion is the latest organization in High Prairie to step forward with a donation to Mike and Lori Denty. Their two sons, Nathan and Kaiden, have familial spastic paraplegia, an inherited disease of the central nervous system. The couple plan to buy a wheelchair-equipped van to ease transport of their two sons. Legion president Don Ebbett, right, presents a cheque for $500 to the Denty family. Left-right are Lori, Kaiden and Mike Denty, and Ebbett. In front is Nathan Denty.
