Pinocchio comes alive in musical - Grade 4-5 students at St. Andrew’s School stage the classic play

What a performance it was, as Pinocchio came alive to lead an ensemble cast.

Students in the Grade 4 classes of Mary Briand and Fran Caudron, as well as Maureen Wilson and Emily Ferguson’s Grade 5 classes, at St. Andrew’s School performed the ‘Pinocchio’ musical April 2-3. Music instructor Stephanie Dube led the students in the production and is proud of them.

“Any of the kids watching it would know the story,” says Dube.

Caitlyn Keshen played Pinocchio for the first performance and Nathan Avery played him in the second. Other lead characters included Chad Halldorson as Geppetto, his dad, Savannah Radcliffe as his mom, Bronte Backs as Mr. Fox, Sean Lanigan as Cat, Jean-Luc Pierre as the toy seller, Brianne Sanders as the book seller and Serafina Jorquera as the candy seller.

Then there was the supporting cast, including students wearing big ties and playing Pinocchio’s choir. There were also many Italian residents.

Although it is only 40 minutes long, the musical adaptation showed Pinocchio’s adventures just as well as the one for the big screen. Pinocchio’s parents are concerned about him venturing into the big world and their concerns are soon confirmed.

Although Pinocchio is supposed to stop at the bookshop on his way through the piazza, he encounters Mr. Fox and his sidekick the Cat instead.

They easily lead him astray to exploit his unique wooden characteristics.

However, when Mr. Fox makes Pinocchio perform in his show, it turns into a disaster because he gets tangled up with some dancers. Mr. Fox is not pleased, so he gives Pinocchio the boot and he returns to his family and lives happily ever after.

Dube thought the ‘Pinocchio’ musical would be good for the students to perform. She learned about it at a teachers’ convention in Edmonton in 2008. She obtained the director’s score and a CD and started rehearsing with students in February.

Bronte Backs plays the sly Mr. Fox in the musical. Mr. Fox thinks Pinocchio will be a great addition to his dancing show, but the wooden boy only causes chaos for him.

Sean Lanigan plays Cat, who is Mr. Fox’s sidekick.

Playing Pinocchio’s dad is Chad Halldorson. Dad gave Pinocchio an errand to stop at the bookstore, but he meets Mr. Fox and Cat instead, making him fear for his wooden son.

Renee Boisson, in front, and Braelynn Walker perform as members of Mr. Fox’s dancing show.

Serafina Jorquera plays the candy seller. Pinocchio may have been tempted to go into her store, but Mr. Fox and Cat diverted him from there.
