Rangers win, Flyers fall short
Chris Clegg
South Peace News
North Peace Hockey League teams have completed play for the season at various provincial tournaments.
The Spirit River Rangers hosted and won the Senior AA championship March 27-29 after defeating the Grande Prairie Athletics 6-2 in the final. Both teams, of course, are from the NPHL which bodes well for the caliber of play in the league from a provincial perspective.
Spirit River reached the finals with a 5-4 win over the Rocky Mountain House Rams and a 7-3 win over the Provost Blades.
Meanwhile, Grande Prairie defeated the Innisfail Eagles 7-4 and the Dewberry Mustangs 8-3 to reach the final.
Rangers and Athletics players also dominated all-star selections. Chad Wilchynski and Donny Lloyd were both chosen on defence from the Rangers while Mike Lefley joined the forward line on the first all-star team. Kelly McLeod from the A’s also joined the team at forward.
On the second team goaltender Darin Allen from the Rangers was selected in goal and Mark Wallman at forward. Grande Prairie’s Scott Taje was selected on defence.
In the McKenzie Cup playoffs, the Bentley Generals defeated the NPHL champion Fort St. John Flyers 3-1 to advance to the Allan Cup tournament in Steinbach, Man. Bentley won the first game April 2 by a score of 5-2; Fort St. John won 6-3 the next night. Bentley won the series with a 3-1 win April 4 and 3-2 win April 5.
The NPHL will hold its spring meeting April 14 in Fairview. On the agenda are possible applications from the Hines Creek Oilers and Dawson Creek Canucks. News last week has also surfaced the Manning Comets may be interested in rejoining the league.

More teams needed for women’s league
Chris Clegg
South Peace News
The High Prairie and District Fastball League will be holding an organizational meeting for the coming season after the Easter break.
The meeting, which will organize both the men’s and women’s divisions, is the only one held each season.
While the men’s division appears to be strong, the same can’t be said for the women. The league desperately wants to have at least four women’s teams this season or consider folding. Three teams just doesn’t provide enough competition for a viable league.
The men don’t have the same problem. They have fielded a competitive league for many years. This year, a new team may join the fold as it was discussed last year that a Masters Team may be formed.
The date for the meeting is expected to be set sometime during the next week.
