These are the observations of author and adventurer Charles Mair, as he first came upon the river during his travels with the Scrip Commission in 1899, published in his book titled “Through the Mackenzie Basin.”

Caribou face extinction threat
Caribou in Canada are disappearing, and Alberta’s caribou are no different. It’s estimated there are 2500 to 4200 woodland caribou left in Alberta. Woodland caribou in Alberta have been classified as threatened under the Alberta Wildlife Act since 1987.
