Exchange your sorrows
Pastor Pat O'Rourke

One of the titles given to Jesus Christ in scripture is “the man of sorrows acquainted with grief.” (Isaiah 53:3)
Why would Jesus come down from heaven to this old Earth, to take upon Himself such a title? Even to carry upon Himself the sorrows of mankind.
The answer is real simple. So we wouldn’t have to. So you and I can live without the crushing weight of sorrow upon us.
You see, the cross of Jesus Christ was much more than a crude wooden timber. The cross became a place of exchange. Jesus took my sorrows upon Himself and gave me his joy. Jesus took my confusion and gave me His clarity. He took my sickness and gave me His healing. He took my poverty and exchanged it for His riches.
This is the grand subject of Isaiah 53.
Today, our world is literally drowning in sorrows. I couldn’t begin to describe the suffering and trials of humanity. You just never know what is going on. Even in the home next to you, or even to the people in the seat beside you. The suffering and human misery is almost overwhelming. Perhaps, the saddest part of it all is the fact that it is needless and pointless.
Why should you carry misery around with you when Jesus paid for your suffering on His cross? I have personally experienced this wonderful exchange. Those of you who know me and my wife, will know the indescribable sorrow that we have endured. Yet today, we are strong and able to lead productive, fruitful lives. We have traded our sorrows for the wonderful love of God. We are excited about what God has for us in the future and look forward to finishing our course here on the Earth.
There is not one word that I have written here that has been any kind of an exaggeration. Jesus can and will carry your sorrows, too. Why not give Him the opportunity?
