Raiders win 13 medals at Divisionals

The Prairie River Junior High School badminton team has completed another successful season by capping the year with their third straight High Prairie School Division title April 4 in Slave Lake.

The Raiders won 13 medals and amassed a team point total of 72. Placing second was crosstown rival St. Andrew’s, who received 59 points, two points ahead of Donnelly G.P. Vanier School.

Teams received seven points for each gold medal won; five points for silver and three points for bronze.

Ashley Cairns won a gold medal at Divisionals in Junior Girls Singles. The gold was an improvement over her silver medal win at the PRJH Invitational Badminton Tournament March 30.

Janelle Carlson and Annikah Sware won gold medals in Junior Girls Doubles. The girls enjoyed a perfect season as they also won gold medals at the PRJH tournament and the Valleyview Cougars Invitational Tournament March 21.

Kendall Carlson and Jacob Pratt won gold in Senior Mixed Doubles. It was their second gold medal performance of the season having also won at Valleyview. They also won silver at the PRJH tournament meaning they fell just short of a clean sweep.

Sharlie Zabolotniuk and Matthew Marquardt continued the gold medal haul at Divisionals after winning in Junior Mixed Doubles.

Destinie and Kelissa Getz won gold in Senior Mixed Doubles. It was their second gold medal performance of the season having already won at the PRJH tournament.

Zach Bliss and Kyle Olanksy won gold medals in Seniors Boys Doubles. They also won gold at the Valleyview tournament.

Dana Barrons and Brynn Halaburda increased their level of play to win gold at Divisionals in Intermediate Girls Doubles. Earlier this season, they won silver at the PRJH tournament.

Evan Griffiths also fared better at Divisionals. She won a silver medal in Senior Girls Singles after winning bronze at the PRJH tournament.

The team of Shane Bjornson and Austen Lee accomplished the same feat at Griffiths. They won silver medals at Divisionals in Intermediate Mixed Doubles after winning bronze at the PRJH tournament.

Nicole Peyre won a silver medal in Intermediate Girls Singles at Divisionals capping a season where she won three medals. She also won a gold at the PRJH tournament and silver at the Valleyview tournament.

Justin Matthews won a silver in Intermediate Boys Singles.

The last medals won at Divisionals were won by the team comprised of Dyanna Monteith and Morgan Marquardt. Their win came in Senior Girls Doubles.

Other PRJH athletes also won medals at other tournaments this season.

Ryan Kocon and T.J. Walker won gold medals in Intermediate Boys Doubles at the PRJH tournament. Unfortunately, Kocon could not attend the Divisional tournament because of the death of his grandmother.

Chris Boulanger Justin Holmes won silver medals in Intermediate Boys Doubles at the PRJH tournament while Amy Kuchuk and Brynn Halaburda won silver medals at Valleyview. Tyler Zabolotniuk and Devon Quartly also won bronze medals in Seniors Boys Doubles at Valleyview.

Club ready to host Gun and Sportsman Show

It’s one of High Prairie’s biggest events, as the eighth annual Gun and Sportsman Show will be held in both arenas this weekend.

The gun show will be held in the Gordon Buchanan Recreation Centre, while RVs, quads, boats and sleds will be on display in the Sports Palace.

Exhibitors from Western Canada will be attending with over 150 tables of merchandise. There will be displays for bench rest shooting, handgun silhouette, trap shooting, skeet shooting and sporting clays, as well as taxidermy services, antiques, crafts and custom made knives. Dennis Hazen will be taking registration for his firearms licensing course.

The doors are open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Sunday. Admission is $5 for adults and children under 12 get in free. An “ole timer” dinner and dance will be held in the curling rink Saturday night and tickets can be purchased at the door for $15.

Three firearms will be raffled – a Savage Model 16 - 300 WSM rifle with Nitrex scope and case, a Henry “Goldenboy” .17 HMR rifle and a Mossberg 12-gauge shotgun. Tickets are still available for $5 each and the draw will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday.
