Chris Clegg
South Peace News

It appears Town of High Prairie Councillor Wilfred Willier has no intentions of answering my question regarding snow removal in High Prairie this past winter.

Readers may remember Clegg’s Corner I wrote in the Feb. 11 South Peace News. In January, I noted with interest the street immediately north of the Sports Palace toward Councillor Willier and CAO Larry Baran’s residence was cleaned three times. To be short, my street was not done once during the same time period!

I asked a simple question: why are the residents on my street not entitled to same level of service?

I asked Councillor Willier this and other questions Feb. 5. I also wanted to know why his street - a residential street - was cleaned soon after the last snowfall when the school bus route near his and Baran’s house was cleaned five days later. This, of course, is the street from High Prairie Elementary School to E.W. Pratt High School, which I am sure almost every school bus travels twice a day to pick up and unload students.

Councillor Willier came and saw me at my office Feb. 12 during the afternoon. He gave me a copy of the snow removal policy. After reading it, I informed him the policy did not answer either of my questions.

I also pointed out to him that school bus routes appeared to be a priority - as they should - but in the case in January, it was not.

Apparently, his and Baran’s street was the priority. Why, I asked.

Councillor Willier promised me the matter would be brought up at the next public works meeting.

However, he did not bring forth the matter at the meeting, nor did he even attend the meeting.

I am still waiting for an answer to my questions.

This is responsible government?

The coffee shops have given me their perspective, however. I’ve been told everything from “What do you expect?” to “They’re only in it for themselves”.

The longer it takes Councillor Willier or anyone from the Town of High Prairie to answer the question, only makes it worse.

Let me give you an example. In regard to council claims, when the press asks for claims, the bigger story actually occurs when the government involved refuses to disclose what they’re doing. The same pertains to this matter. By refusing to answer a simple question, it certainly appears Willier and council are hiding.

Perhaps the real reason is that they’re steaming mad that someone imposed on their perfect little world? How anyone dare upset the apple cart! We don’t really know because they aren’t answering the question.

It’s now been over two months and no one is taking. It appears the strategy is, ignore the problem and hope it goes away.

The fact is, it’s not the way to properly deal with matters concerning citizens. Councillor Willier’s actions in this matter can only be descried as shameful.

I’ve now sent a letter to the entire council asking for answers. Given the past history, I’m not holding my breath waiting for an decent answer.
