A silent auction and social is also included during the evening’s activities.

Tickets are $25 and available from Leonarda’s Beauty Salon, Macleods True Value Hardware, Rhonda Keay at 780-523-4082, Jane Kuchuk at 780-523-5667, Tammy Matthews at 780-523-7119, Lori Matthews at 780-523-5420 or Heather Berg at 780-523-4060.

Late last week, the event was nearing a sellout.

North Zone Walk-a-Thon May 2

The High Prairie Elks and Royal Purple are continuing efforts to raise money for charity.

The local groups are co-hosting the North Zone Walk-a-Thon May 2 to raise money for the Elks and Royal Purple Fund for Children.

Registration is at 11 a.m. with a noon lunch to follow. The walk-a-thon begins at 1 p.m. and ends at 5 p.m. when a steak barbecue supper will be held for $10. Refreshments will be for sale on site.

All events occur at the patio at the High Prairie Elks Stampede Grounds.

Highlighting the fun-filled evening will be a jam session so be sure to bring your guitar, banjo, fiddle or any other musical instrument.

Citizens in the community are encouraged to support the event by pledging money to anyone taking part in the walk-a-thon.

The Elks and Royal Purple Fund for Children provides assistance to children in need. The fund promotes early deaf detection and treatment and promotes addiction awareness. The fund is also a major supporter of the Institute for Stuttering treatment and research.

Concert at Bethel Baptist May 2

Eric Angus Whyte will be appearing at High Prairie Bethel Baptist Church May 2 at 8 p.m.

Tickets are $7.50 per person at the door and can be purchased by calling 780-523-3251.

Whyte arrived on the East Coast music scene in 2004 with the release of his debut album ‘Always Home’. The disc was nominated for the 2005 ECMA Folk Album of the Year.

In 2007, he released a disc called ‘A Little Rough Around the Edges’. It has been heralded as “the most refreshing and innovative album I’ve ever heard in long time.”.

Whyte performs in prisons and churches across Canada with his variety of Cape Breton lyrics.

“I enjoy playing for audiences that you can let your guard down around and speak openly about life and convictions and Jesus,” he says. “I find you get that dynamic frequently in prisons, often in churches and occasionally in pubs.”

His performances include the use of hammered dulcimer, bouzouki, piano and a few other less legitimate instruments like the kazoo.

Hike for Hospice May 3

This year’s Hike for Hospice Walk has been set for May 3 beginning at 1 p.m.

The annual walk, now in its seventh year, is the primary fundraiser for the High Prairie and District Palliative Care Society. It is held in conjunction with all palliative care walks across Canada.

Pledge forms may be obtained at three locations in the High Prairie Health Complex: at the admitting desk, at Public Health offices and at the Palliative Care office which can be accessed through the visitor’s entrance.

The walk begins at Freson IGA, a long-time sponsor of the event. Local entertainment will be provided.

T-shirts will be provided to all hikers, who have a choice of two walks. The full circuit is 6.6 km around the Rodeo grounds and home or the halfway loop back at 3 km.
