Fashion show

Students in E.W. Pratt High School’s Cosmetology class received a rare chance to showcase their talents April 29 by holding a fashion show.
The show gave students a first-hand and very practical chance to show what they’ve learned through the year.
The school offers two classes, says instructor Lorna Cameron, one in the morning, the other in the afternoon. The much larger morning class staged the show with the afternoon class helping in any way possible including selling products.
This was the first time the 30 students in the Cosmetology class held a fashion show, says Cameron, but certainly not the last.
“The students felt great,” says Cameron after the show. “Many people gave them compliments.”
The idea for the fashion show came from Eveline Charles Academy in Edmonton. The owner, originally from Falher, staged a show the Pratt students saw.
“We saw what they did and we wanted to do it,” says Cameron, who is teaching her second year at Pratt.
In the show, students were able to choose their own models, who received permission to take part. Three High Prairie stores took part by providing clothing including A-1 Western Wear Tack and Gifts, Ditch Denim and Trends and Images.
“They were great,” says Cameron. “Susan (Richter) at Trends and Images even brought the clothes over. Clothes were set aside for the models to try on.”
The stores gave models and stylists the thrill of picking the clothes to match the hair styles they chose, just like the professionals.
Models walked a runway set up in the Pratt gym. A description of each outfit was read while Power Point graphics and music were provided courtesy of Nola Sinclair’s computer class. Students Alex Shaw and Chasity Gladue provided the music and graphics with the help of the stylists.
In the Cosmetology class, students learn personal grooming, hair styling, hair braiding, basic hair styling but not cutting, because Cameron is not trained to instruct. Skin care, facials and nails are also taught. Senior students do waxing.
“There are about 16 different courses to choose from,” says Cameron.
Cameron says the course is valuable because it gives students many options.
“It gets them thinking maybe I want this as a career,” says Cameron.
And, with the booming industry only expanding by leaps and bounds, many opportunities are afforded to those who choose to make it a career.
“I just think it’s a really valuable class,” says Cameron.
Students also provide makeovers for students at the Youth Assessment Centre once a month. Last year, they also did makeovers for women at the Sucker Creek Women’s Emergency Shelter and plan to do so again.
“The students really enjoy practicing on the volunteer clients,” says Cameron, adding it gives them experience.
