Junior team interim board plans budget

The interim board for the Junior B hockey franchise in High Prairie has created a preliminary budget and a sponsorship letter.

Meeting in the Town council chamber April 27, the board also discussed other matters they have to deal with before going to the Northwest Junior Hockey League’s annual general meeting in Grande Prairie May 23.

“We have to do a lot of work yet,” says board member Raymond Carifelle.

“The thing we’re looking for right now is key sponsors so we can get this thing on the road. From there, we’ll know (where things stand) with the money situation and hopefully have an interim manager before the May 23 meeting in Grande Prairie.”

The coach and manager positions have to be filled before then, as does the players’ list, but Carifelle is optimistic the players could be recruited without difficulty.

“It’s not going to be a problem for us to find … the players we need, I think we have that talent already. It’s out there, we just have to make sure we can dress a full squad.”

Rick Dumont, another board member, wrote the sponsorship letter and Carifelle says it will help. Carifelle plans to approach several businesses with it and he welcomes and appreciates all the support the region can provide.

“We’re serious about (the Junior B team). We do have a board of directors. We do have a lot of fan support out there. They would really come and support us when the team is in the league and we’d have a good turnout for the first game.”

Minor hockey in the region would benefit from the Junior B team as well, he adds.

According to the preliminary budget, the total expenses for the first season would be $67,196 or $61,466 with savings options. For instance, on-ice practice time would cost $9,450, at three hours per week times 25 weeks, at $126 per hour. The cost of 22 home ice games would be $8,316, while bussing for 20 away games would cost $22,000, at $1,100 per trip.

The local purchase of sweaters and socks would be $10,800 but only $7,200 for an out-of-town purchase. Thirty sets of helmets/gloves/pants would cost $9,630, at $321 per set, while the cost of 30 helmets/gloves/pant liners would cost only $7,500, at $250 per set. Thirty hockey bags would cost $2,100, tape/wrap would cost $2,500 and player cards/insurance would be another $2,400.

The costs do not include hockey sticks, player billeting, coach salary/expenses, team jackets, etc.

Revenues would come from gate sales, assuming 250 people per game at $8 per person times 18 games, for a total of $36,000 for the season. The team could seek program revenue through advertising, major sponsors for the jerseys, possibly $5,000 each, as well as minor sponsors, possibly $5,000 each.

Two business plans are being developed, one by Hector Lamouche and the other by Peter Keay and Robert Olansky. One plan must be approved and ready for the meeting in Grande Prairie.

The interim board will hold another meeting at the Town office May 11, beginning at 7 p.m. and the public is welcome to attend.
