Last fall, Sarah Thomsen created the 100-km Swim Club Challenge to encourage swimmers to improve their cardiovascular, but also to have fun.
“It gave them a challenge, many didn’t think they could do it,” says Thomsen, a lifeguard at the High Prairie Aquatic Centre.
In recognition of their achievement, Thomsen held a wrap-up party at the pool May 5. Attendees received white t-shirts with the 100 km Swim Club Challenge logo on the back and some of them received prizes for a draw too.
Thirty-eight swimmers enrolled for the program, which started Oct. 1, 2008 and ended April 30, 2009. Sixteen people completed the 100 km, while others did the swim as teams to share the challenge. A chart was set up in the lobby to track the participants’ progress.
Thomsen says 40 lengths of the pool are equivalent to one km and she recommended swimmers go to the pool four times a week to keep pace with the challenge. She calculates they swam a combined 2,468 km and 98,724 lengths of the pool.
Melanie Middelkoop completed the 100 km and wants to do it again.
“I like a challenge and found out about it at an aquacise session,” says Middelkoop, adding she likes the social aspect of the swim.
John Taszlikowicz, another participant, praises Thomsen for holding the event.
“This (event) was a great time to meet people, it was fantastic,” says Taszlikowicz, adding it was good therapy for his dislocated left shoulder.
Thomsen wants to hold the challenge again next fall.
