High Prairie E.W. Pratt High School will be one of four locations for a regional youth conference May 25-29.
The conference begins in Wabasca May 25 before going to Pratt from 10:15 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. May 26. On May 27 the scene switches to G.P. Vanier School in Donnelly before ending May 29 at Peace River Glenmary School.
The conference is held by the Peace River Regional Youth Conference Committee. Its mandate is to encourage and educate youth in northern communities.
One of the organizers, Gwena Cunningham, says youth 13-19 years will be taking part. The goals of the conference are as follows:
* encourage improved identity formation for youth;
* relationship building for youth regardless or culture and background;
* promote the stay in school message;
* reduce potential for delinquent behaviors by encouraging positive choices;
* link teens with local support systems;
* help teens recognize the positive role models in their lives.
Troy Payne and the Red Power Squad are the two keynote presenters.
Payne speaks about what parents and members of the community can do to ensure children lead healthy lives. He also speaks about breaking the cycle of adversity and the chains that hold people back. He also shares advice on what to do when facing adversity.
The Red Power Squad is a performing group from Edmonton first formed to give inner city youth a way out of all the negativity they face daily. They combine native dancing with their performance and have performed all over the world.
The Peace River Regional Youth Conference Committee is comprised of Family and Community Support Services Northwest Region, the Peace River Aboriginal Interagency Committee, Child and Family Services Authority, Holy Family Catholic Regional School Division, Peace River School Division, Northlands School Division and others.
