NLC will share in $12M funding bonanza

Northern Lakes College is one of four post-secondary institutions to share $12 million in investment from the Government of Canada.

Fort McMurray-Athabasca MP Brian Jean made the joint announcement May 15. Government of Alberta MLAs Guy Boutilier, Pearl Calahasen, Jeff Johnson and Ray Danyluk also took part.

Besides Northern Lakes College, Athabasca University, Keyano College and Portage College will receive money.

“By renewing our college and university facilities in Northern Alberta, our students and researchers will have the tools they need to continue to pursue excellence in their fields,” says Jean. “Our government is proud to be working with our provincial partners to invest in innovation, in order to create jobs, to help our economy recover quickly and to improve the quality of life, for Canadians.”

Northern Lakes College was awarded $1.3 million for upgrades to fire, safety and security systems. Meanwhile, Athabasca University was awarded $8 million for upgrades and renovations to main campus facilities and science laboratories. Portage College was awarded $550,000 for the replacement of air handling units and $1.7 million for the replacement of chilled water distribution lines and Keyano College was awarded $2.3 million for the improvements to barrier-free accessibility and life health safety systems renewal throughout the campus.

Each investment was allocated based on the merit and readiness of individual projects proposed within the riding of Fort McMurray-Athabasca.

The investment is part of the Knowledge Infrastructure Fund, which is comprised of a 50 per cent contribution by the federal and provincials governments. The fund is a two-year, $2 billion economic stimulus measure. It provides money to support deferred maintenance, repair and expansion projects at universities and colleges.

“These cooperative efforts to deepen support for post-secondary education will bring lasting benefits to all Canadians,” says High Prairie’s MP.
