Canada Day celebrations in Joussard will not be supported financially by the M.D. of Big Lakes after council defeated a motion to donate $1,000 toward the event at its May 27 meeting.
“Why would the (Elks Pro Rodeo) get money and not Canada Day?” asked Joussard Councilor Guy L’Heureux.
Debate began when Joussard Community Association president Maureen Renneberg wrote council with the request.
“This event attracts about 500 people attending the various functions put on in the afternoon and evening,” she wrote.
A bike parade, children’s races and games, adult games including horseshoes, golf and a cribbage tournament are all held.
“This is meant to be a day of fun,” she added. “The volunteer fire department also helps by providing water activities … and security when the fireworks are held.”
JCA receives a federal grant to help offset costs, said L’Heureux, who also serves as JCA president.
“We sing O Canada in French. For them, that’s good enough!”
Prairie Echo, Salt Prairie Councilor David Marx, who earlier voted against helping to sponsor a Father’s Day brunch in Joussard, spoke.
“I have to vote against that for the same reason,” he said.
“I can’t support that,” said Marx in regard to the brunch. “I don’t think that’s our mandate. It’s for special projects.”
Faust Councilor Violet Campiou voted with L’Heureux in favour of the motion. She informed council a similar request would be coming from Faust next month.
