Rules of the road

RCMP Const. Daryn Pysklywyc inspects five-year-old Konnor Killoran’s bicycle. Killoran wanted to participate in the bike road-e-o, but he had to practice without training wheels first. Killoran was a little wobbly at first, but got through the course fairly well. The bike road-e-o was held June 14 in the Sports Palace parking lot. Children learned proper hand signalling, looking both ways before crossing the street and wearing a helmet.


Legion unveils new cenotaph
For Leo Goulet, the unveiling of the new cenotaph at the High Prairie Royal Canadian Legion June 6 had special significance.

This year’s summer reading program at the High Prairie Municipal Library will surely have children reaching for their magnifying glasses and looking for crooks!

Defeating Diabetes one step at a time
Maureen Thunder knows the consequences of diabetes, having had it herself for over 30 years. Her mother, Doris Thunder, also died from diabetes complications in November 2008 while waiting for a kidney transplant. However, she carries her mother in her heart and was part of the eleventh annual Driftpile Diabetes Walk June 11

Stinkweed to some opportunity for others
For Stan Peacock, building a biodiesel fuel plant in the Peace District and establishing the stinkweed, Pennycress, as a high-yield, low-cost crop as part of the fuel production would be a major coup.

Protection needed against dreaded ‘white combines’
As High Prairie-area crops begin to grow and another hail season approaches, many farmers across the province will be casting a nervous eye at the sky - hoping their fields are spared from hail damage this summer.

Front Page - Do or die for Beautification June 17 The public is invited to attend a meeting in the town council chamber at 7 p.m. June 17, to discuss the possible reinstatement of the organization.

Page 3 - Doctor recruitment drive fizzles Hopes the High Prairie Hospital would be welcoming two new doctors to its staff were smashed to bits June 5. Royal Purple calls for help Each year, the Royal Purple operate the food booth at the High Prairie Elks Pro Rodeo. This year is no exception so the call for volunteers is being extended early. The rodeo is scheduled for July 28-29 so now is the time to plan to help, if available. The joys of cooking! Marigold Enterprises held a barbecue and car wash June 12. Lee Laboucan and Bob Dlugosz volunteered to cook the hotdogs and hamburgers. Town of High Prairie owns Whitefish Inn With no other bids forthcoming, the Town of High Prairie purchased the Whitefish Inn to resell the property and collect all outstanding property taxes.

Pratt announces May’s Shining Stars Each month during the school year, E.W. Pratt High School will be selecting three outstanding students who best exhibit the qualities in a chosen characteristic. May was ‘optimism’ month at Pratt; staff watched to see which students exhibited optimism not only to themselves but to staff and students. This month’s theme is ‘self-motivation’. Congratulations to this month’s students! Jenny Ayles Grade 11 Jenny Ayles really likes the variety of options courses here at E.W. Pratt because she thinks classes like I.A. and Cosmetology are great alternative choices. Taneshia Hammoud Grade 11 Taneshia Hammoud loves to be creative and is very artistic. She likes to paint and draw, but she also enjoys reading and playing tennis. Morgan Nesom Grade 12 Morgan Nesom enjoys attending our school because “people push to make it better” by using surveys and always trying to improve.
