This year’s summer reading program at the High Prairie Municipal Library will surely have children reaching for their magnifying glasses and looking for crooks!

‘Agent 009’ begins July 2 at 1:30 p.m. with the traditional kickoff party including cake.

Aneta Staniszewski, 24, is this year’s summer reading program coordinator. The University of Alberta student says the spy game is an excellent theme for children to enjoy their summer.

“Everyone will get a badge at the kickoff party,” she says.

Fingerprints will also be taken and police tape depicting a crime scene will be placed around the library.

“We’re pretty sure we’ll have a scavenger hunt inside and an obstacle course outside,” says Staniszewski.

Children can register in three groups this summer. The 3-6-year-olds meet Tuesday and Thursday from 10-11:30 a.m.; the 6-9-year-olds meet from 2-4 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday and the 9-12-year-olds meet from 2-4 p.m. Wednesday and Friday.

Cost to register is a very cheap $10 per child if you have a library membership but $15 if you do not. A family rate of two or more children for $25 also applies.

The program is divided into three sections:

* detective work focusing on fingerprints, animal tracking, teeth impressions, lip impressions, wanted posters and more. Each child will have their photo taken and placed on a wanted poster;

* secret codes and messages including Morse Code and Braille;

* disguises the last two weeks. Wigs with yarn, glasses, moustaches and much more will be involved.

Guest readers have also been invited including the local fire chief, police officers and Alberta Forestry employees. Taking part in the annual Elks Pro Rodeo Parade and Penny Carnival are also included.

Still, the goal of the course is to maintain children’s interest in reading over the summer. Staniszewski says the library had a good collection of spy books to read.

“Children can earn Book Bucks,” says Staniszewski. “They can read books or read to their younger siblings. If you get caught reading around town you’ll also get Book Bucks.”

However, they can also be taken away for misbehaving!

Major sponsors of the summer reading program are the library, Peace Library System and the TD Bank. POPS Home Hardware has also donated a BMX bike for the boys and an 18-speed for the girls.

Staniszewski is the daughter of Kaz and Hanna Staniszewski of High Prairie. She just completed her Bachelor of Arts at the U of A and is now entering her first year in the Fine Arts program specializing in painting and figurative sculpture. She is a graduate of E.W. Pratt High School.

The library is also still looking for donations. If interested, call the library at 780-523-3838.
