Five High Prairie residents – Dorothy Anderson, Elmer Anderson, Lillian Bliss, Dorothy Calvert and Lloyd Gauchier - have made the cut to golf in the Alberta 55 Plus Summer Games in Airdrie, July 23-26.

They were among 19 people from Fairview, Grande Prairie and High Prairie who golfed in the Zone 8 tournament in High Prairie June 13.

The games are old hat for some winners, but others are competing for the first time, including Dorothy Anderson.

“I’m quite excited,” she says. “I’m not nervous yet, but I probably will be when I get there.”

She scored 103 in the tournament and says her game could have been better. A long-time golfer, she took first in the top flight at the ladies open tournament in 2008. She also made a hole-in-one in 1994 and received a plaque.

Elmer Anderson, her husband, scored 82 in the tournament, which is a pretty good average for him and he’s happy with it. He had many opportunities for birdies, but he couldn’t sink them.

He qualified twice for the games, but didn’t do well on either occasion. However, he is optimistic he’ll do well this time and will practice before going.

“I’ll be more prepared this time around, because I know what the competition is like,” he says.

Bliss scored 107 in the tournament, which is what she usually gets. She, too, is looking forward to playing in Airdrie.

“This is my first time going, I’m very excited,” says Bliss. “I like being out in the fresh air and challenging myself.”

A score of 116 is an average game for Calvert, which is what she shot in the tournament. Calvert was surprised she qualified to go to Airdrie and thought the tournament was just for fun. She, too, will practice before going.

“It’s going to be quite a new experience,” says Calvert, who plays on ladies night and in the seniors’ tournament in High Prairie.

Lloyd Gauchier scored 95 in the zone tournament and says he could have done better. He is a veteran of two summer games, including the 2005 games in Wetaskiwin where he placed fifth.

During the Fort Saskatchewan games in 2007, he took seven strokes on a par three, then parred for seven holes. He was denied victory again, but placed fourth.

Gauchier is looking forward to Airdrie and will be breaking in a new set of clubs before going.

The Alberta 55 Plus Summer Games are held every two years. It is the first time the Zone 8 golf tournament has been held in High Prairie. Eleven local people played in it this year, giving the event greater exposure, says organizer Mary Zabolotniuk.
