Dressed in their purple or green regalia, the children in Dawn Cunningham’s early childhood services program smiled as they received their certificates and bags.
They were part of Peavine Bishop Routhier School’s awards night at the Peavine community centre June 23.
Rachel Starr, the Grade 4/Cree teacher, opened the event with the Lord’s Prayer. Then principal Bruce Joudrey offered the opening remarks, highlighting the success the school had during the year, which included placing third at the Northland School Division’s games in Wabasca May 29.
“We are, indeed, a settlement of champions,” says Joudrey. “I see a group of champions in front of me. We are still leading in Northland. We try. We don’t just throw in the towel, we keep trying.”
Joudrey also read a letter from Supt. Pier de Paola, congratulating everyone for their successes.
School board chairperson Chris Noskey spoke next, saying it has been a very successful year, as the school has improved academically and it will continue to improve with support. The school has published its first yearbook in 17 years, which is a great thing, he adds.
Assistant Supt. Shelly Willier also spoke, saying it was a special day and the students were being recognized for their hard work. The board and their parents are proud of them, she adds.
Next, Joudrey and the teachers presented the students with their awards.
Near the end, Grade 4 students Jordyn Rich and Ivanna Villeneuve sang ‘Best Friends Forever’.
The awards night marked the end of the school year.
