Two junior golfers from High Prairie will be teeing it up with Alberta’s elite Aug. 31 at the prestigious Wolf Creek Golf Resort near Ponoka as part of the McLennan Ross Sun Junior Golf Tour.
Dylan Barrons and Quinton Guttinger both qualified for the finals in their respective age groups by placing at the Whitecourt tournament June 30. Each fired an 18-hole score of 76 to tie for fifth overall.
Dylan Barrons is the son of Tom and Roberta Barrons; Quinton Guttinger the son of Rick and Norma Guttinger.
This year is the 14th season of the tour, originally organized to provide junior golfers the opportunity to develop their game in a series of coordinated tournaments in Alberta. The tournament provides a challenge for the elite golfer and also a valuable experience for the beginning golfer, who must experience the competition at some point before playing competitively.
Golfers who do well on the tour can later access scholarships to help further their education.
12 straight and counting

The High Prairie 86’ers swept the defending league champion Whitefish Lake Hawks 2-0 and 5-0 at Jaycee Park July 2 run their undefeated streak to 12 games.
Cory Giroux’s two-run homer in the fifth inning was all the offence the 86’ers would need as the rode the complete game starting pitching of Huckle Giroux to victory in the first game.
In the nightcap, Rollie Gladue’s RBI single in the second inning scored Giroux, who led off with a double. The 86’ers would add two runs in the third on Jonny Giroux’s two-run home run and singles in the fourth and sixth inning on home runs by Gladue and Cory Giroux respectively.
Ralphie Courtorielle started the game and was the winning pitcher pitching all seven innings.
The 86’ers won their tenth straight game at Peavine June 30 against the Bench Warmers 14-6. Poor fielding in blustery and cold conditions plagued both teams on a night where the 86’ers could have easily lost despite the lopsided score. The Bench Warmers made three errors but other plays not made resulted in eight runs scored for the 86’ers that led them to victory.
The 86’ers never trailed by scoring three runs in the first inning and two in the second, fourth and seventh innings. They added five runs in the fifth after a difficult fly ball wasn’t caught that resulted in the rally.
The 86’ers outhit the Bench Warmers 18-9, who played the game without starting pitcher Lindsay Cunningham.
