Several pieces of the puzzle were settled as the High Prairie and District Men’s Fastball League concluded regular season play last week.
However, with two games still to be played, playoff positions still need to be determined. Ironically, it is known who will play each other in the league quarter-finals, but home field advantage still must be determined in one series.
The High Prairie 86’ers finished in first place with a record of 14-2 while the Peavine Rangers have clinched second with a 12-3 record. The Rangers have one game left against the Peavine Canadian Boyz. Both the 86’ers and Rangers receive byes in the first round and await the winners in the quarter-finals series.
The defending league champion Whitefish Lake Hawks have clinched third place with a 10-5 record. They swept the Bench Warmers in the regular season and would also win a three-way tiebreaker if the Canadian Boyz swept their final two games. The Hawks have one game left against the Canadian Boyz. They will play the sixth place Peavine Young Guns in the best-of-three quarter-finals series, even if they lose their final game to the Canadian Boyz.
The Peavine Bench Warmers completed their season with as 10-6 record; however, they would lose any tiebreaker with the Hawks, or with the Hawks and Canadian Boyz. They will place fourth or fifth and play the Canadian Boyz in the quarter-final. Home field still has to be determined.
The Canadian Boyz currently sit at 8-6 in fifth place. If they lose any of their two remaining games, they will place fifth. However, if they sweep the Hawks and Rangers, they move up to fourth and gain the all-important home field advantage against the Bench Warmers.
The Peavine Young Guns await their first playoff game with the Hawks, who are assured of third. They completed their season with a 7-9 record.
The Gift Lake Juniors lost games last week to Driftpile and the Rangers to eliminate them from playoff contention.
The Driftpile Titans (3-13) and East Prairie (0-16) finished well back. East Prairie folded early in the season.
League president Peter Keay could not be reached for comment on the weekend. He could decide to order the games be completed July 20, or simply rule the season over and playoffs start July 21.
