Five High Prairie seniors returned home from the Alberta 55+ Seniors Games in Airdrie July 23-26 with silver medals.
Doris Sekulich won silver in Women’s 55+ 8-Ball while the floor curling team of skip Alicemary Olansky, third Polly Stafford, second Annie Blackhurst and lead Vicky Mazurek won silver medals.
Sekulich, who lost her only match to Wendy Bond of Calgary, says she played very well. She went 6-1 in the round-robin tournament before winning a playoff for silver.
“I had beat (Bond) before, that’s what made me so mad,” says Sekulich, who was gunning for gold. She had already won medals at other games.
Sekulich won the silver medal playoff in three straight games in the best-of-five match over a competitor from Westlock.
“I played very well, I was happy,” she says. “I was happy with my performance.”
Olansky says her floor curling team also played well.
“We had close games, every game except one,” she says. “We’re pretty happy with the way we played.”
Most games were close and went back-and-forth with both teams enjoying leads. It made for a good tournament.
It was the first medals the team won although Kushner has won a medal at a previous games in another event.
Olansky’s team went 5-1-1 to win silver. There was no playoff.
The winning team was comprised by three seniors from Drayton Valley including Joyce Schwalbe, Lare Whelen and Phyllis Fowler and Joyce Goerz from Duffield.
