The federal government has turned down the Town of High Prairie’s request for funding to reconstruct 52 Ave.
“Although your BCF-CC project was worthy, we regret to inform you that it was not among the limited number of projects for which funding was available. Funding could only address the 73 highest ranked applications of the 400 applications received,” says Andrew Cathcart, the director of the program secretariat for BCF-CC in Edmonton.
The Town applied for $1.4 million under the Building Canada Fund – Communities Component Agreement.
The project will have to be financed by other means.
During the Aug. 11 meeting of the Town’s public works committee, Mayor Rick Dumont made a motion to have the project part of the Town’s 2010 budget deliberations and it was passed.
Dumont needs a cost estimate from public works superintendent Vern Walker, including the gutter work. Walker will provide the estimate at a future committee meeting.
The committee also requires a cost estimate for widening 53 Ave., between Charrois Motor Products and POPS Hardware and Building Centre.
Dumont asked Walker if he had one and he said the preliminary estimate is $2.9 million, including a storm sewer, curb and gutter work, a sidewalk and $900,000 for a pedestrian bridge. Dumont did not like the sound of the price for the bridge and Walker agreed.
Walker will inquire about the cost of the work and provide the information at the next committee meeting Sept. 8.
High Prairie town council may have the work done as part of the hospital construction, ensuring pedestrians can walk safely to and from the hospital, says Walker.
