The Our Place Youth Centre, located in the High Prairie Native Friendship Centre, is cramped for space and seeking support for its plan for a new building.
“I want to get a bigger space so I can open Friday and Saturday evenings,” says Karlynn Willier, the youth program coordinator. “A new facility would provide employment opportunities as well.”
Willier held a meeting with executive director Victoria Barsalou and Cindy Halcrow, the Common Ground Initiative facilitator, and they determined a new building is required to handle the programs offered and being planned. They are working on a business plan, including funding sources.
Currently offered is an Xbox, Wii, a homework centre, a reading centre and board games. She also wants to offer other programming such as dancing. Existing programming includes movie night Tuesdays, girls’ night Wednesdays, swimming Thursdays and sledding in the winter Fridays. Mondays are open for whatever the youths want.
Willier is seeking letters of support from the Town of High Prairie and the M.D. of Big Lakes for the new facility. She made a multimedia presentation to the High Prairie town council Aug. 12 explaining the need for more space. She will attend the town council meeting Aug. 26 to find out if it will be forthcoming.
The police cadets start again in the fall and the registration forms are available at the friendship centre. Recruiters are also required for the cadets, as are volunteers to sit on the youth council.
For more information, please call Willier at 780-523-4511.
