M.D. will keep Kinuso municipal office open

Residents in the hamlet of Kinuso can look forward to having a municipal office open in their community, despite the fact they surrendered village status effective Sept. 1.

The M.D. of Big Lakes, who assumed Kinuso’s operations, met Sept. 1 and decided to keep the office open on an interim basis until the end of the year. However, the number of days the office will open and hours are still to be determined.

M.D. CAO Jeff Renaud said “the world kind of changed when (the Alberta government) took away our funding” referring to the $1.7 million in transitional money first promised. Some of the money would have been used to keep an office open.

“Maybe two days a week,” said Reeve Alvin Billings.

“I think it’d be important to keep it open,” said Faust Councillor Violet Campiou.

Renaud agreed saying it would be easier to pay bills. He also suggested different department heads could be at the office so residents could meet and discuss concerns.

Joussard Councillor Guy L’Heureux suggested Kinuso’s Family and Community Services worker could also move into the office.

“I think we should look at putting her there. We need an office there.”

Councillors were unanimous in agreeing to keep the office open. Sunset House, Gilwood South Councillor Randy Ehman echoed council’s sentiments by saying it would allow for a smooth transition.

Renaud was directed to determine costs and bring back a proposal for council to consider at its Sept. 16 meeting with the understanding the FCS program would move in.

The possibility of Spruce Point Park Association also sharing office space was also considered.
