51-year wait for rodeo in Kinuso ends
Chris Clegg

Rodeo fans at Swan River First Nation waited 51 years for a rodeo to be held in their community. The long wait ended Aug. 29-30 as Swan River hosted what they hope to be an annual rodeo. The last rodeo, held on the west end of town, was remembered before current rodeo fans enjoyed the Wild West action of all the major events of rodeo. The rodeo was actually the first of the 2010 Wildrose Rodeo Association’s calendar so cowboys and cowgirls were anxious to get the year off to a good start. Other activities at the event included a hand games tournament, traditional native dancing and a rodeo dance.

Jim Gunsch, of Thorsby, Alta., managed to catch his prey in calf roping. His time of 13.20 seconds was one of the better marks the first day of competition. Most of the calves managed to elude their opponent leaving the audience to applaud each cowboy’s effort as his only reward.
