Regals face threat of folding

Since 1957-58, the High Prairie Regals have operated a team in the North Peace Hockey League.
However, that honourable and much-envied streak may come to an end this season after straight 52 years.
The Regals have called a meeting for tonight (Sept. 15) at 7:30 p.m. in the Sports Palace. The seriousness of the situation cannot be understated, as more people are desperately needed to form an executive.
“We need 15 committed players or we fold,” says secretary Rhonda Berg, one of a few current executive members to keep the club operating the past few years.
In addition, new executive members are needed to operate the club. Current club president Lee Hunt, also a two-time winner of the NPHL coach-of-the-year honours, has expressed an interesting stepping down.
“We need help, this is very serious,” says Berg.
The NPHL held its fall meeting Sept. 10 in Fairview and the Regals were the only team not represented. NPHL president Jack McAvoy spoke with Hunt on the weekend and says the league needs to know soon whether the Regals will operate.
If there is no interest at the Sept. 15 meeting, the Regals will be requesting a leave of absence from the NPHL.
The Regals are tied with the Grimshaw Huskies for the most titles in league history with 13.
