Play Program lives again

A last-minute effort to resurrect the High Prairie Play Program Association has been successful.

Acting president Michelle Strebchuk says an instructor has been hired and they are ready to accept registrations next week.

As early as July, the association was meeting to dissolve. Long-time instructor Rose Toner left after 15 years to pursue other opportunities and Lisa Beamish is on maternity.

However, interest in the program increased to the point where Carol Fenn-Radcliffe expressed a desire in teaching the program.

“She didn’t want to see it fold,” says Strebchuk. “She has all the qualifications. She’s more than qualified to take on this role and she’s willing to mentor the assistant.”

The association interviewed applicants Sept. 21 and will be hiring an assistant Sept. 23. They will then hold their annual general meeting and registration Sept. 30 in the Play Program room upstairs in the Sports Palace.

The Play Program is for children four years old by Dec. 31. The program teaches children to play and learn together in a healthy environment. The only requirement for children to enrol is they must be potty trained.

The fee is $75 a month this season for each child with a maximum of 12 children accepted. The association plans on operating a Tuesday and Thursday morning and afternoon class if enough children register. A third class, to be held Wednesday, is possible if registrations warrant.

Strebchuk says Fenn-Radcliffe will be present at registration to meet each parent. It is hoped the assistant will also be able to attend.

Strebchuk says parents will have to pay a $100 refundable involvement fee this year because there is no more bingo revenue. Parents can volunteer for fundraising ventures and receive their money back at the end of the year.

Any parent is also welcome to join the executive.
