Sports: Clay shooting highlights shoot, open house

The High Prairie Fish and Game Association held another successful shooting event and open house at their range Sept. 12-13.

The turnout was good and there were a lot of novices present, says Darrell Basarab, vice-president of the association.

A new event was held this year, sporting clay shooting. Bill Bramley, a member of Wapiti Shooters Club in Grande Prairie, brought four machines to demonstrate the sport.

“It simulates hunting animals like rabbits, ducks and grouse. That’s what it’s designed to do,” says Bramley.

He set the machines to throw clays in different directions and angles. Competitors shot at two stations, shooting four singles and then four sets of doubles at each.

Normally, there are five shooters in a squad and they travel the course together, allowing for social interaction.

“It’s not just about shooting,” says Bramley, adding there are many configurations for a tournament and several sizes of sporting clays and machines.

Basarab thanks all who attended and supported the event. He says trap and skeet shooting will continue at the range Sundays starting at 1 p.m., until the daylight and weather no longer allow it.

Newcomers are always welcome.
