Oct. 4 FireChase attendance expected to top 200 - Pardell

It’s an event that keeps getting bigger and better!

High Prairie Fire Department organizers are optimistic this year’s FireChase will top 200 entries.

The event runs Oct. 4 at Jaycee Park beginning at 1:30 p.m.

The event, which encourages everyone to live a more healthy and active lifestyle, features a five-km run and walk and well as a 10-km run and walk along the Riana Otto and Stan Kozie walking trails. The 10-km walk begins at 1:30 p.m., the 10-km run at 2 p.m. and the five-km run and walk at 2:15 p.m.

Deputy fire chief Lynne Pardell says the event keeps growing with a record 198 participants last year.

“This year, I’d like to break 200,” she says.

Registration was already at 140 over 10 days before the event.

Plenty of door prizes will be given away with the first 120 registrants each receiving a T-shirt and goodie bag.

“We have two bikes from Macleods True Value Hardware,” says Pardell. “And all the kids will go home with something.”

Pardell is pleased with the support FireChase receives each year. Businesses have staff attend as teams while for years teachers from St. Andrew’s School and High Prairie Elementary School attend en masse.

“This year there may be some hockey teams coming,” adds Pardell.

“And it’s always nice to see families coming,” she adds.

Registration is also growing from out-of-town, says Pardell, adding the event is gaining popularity.

Pardell is also pleased sponsorship went well.

Major sponsors include the Town of High Prairie, M.D. of Big Lakes, Charrois Motor Products, Baron Oilfield Supply, ATCO Electric, Monahan Ford Kawasaki, A&W, Buchan Lumber, Pomeroy Inn and Suites, Freson IGA, Big Lakes Dodge, B.W. Rentals and True Value Hardware.

“Everyone in town is really supportive,” she says.”

Mascots have been invited to attend to delight the children including Sparky the Fire Dog, the A&W Root Bear, Louie the Lightning Bug, Bertie Beaver, Trusty the Husky and Dolly Wally.

A band from Slave Lake will be entertaining the runners and organizers.

A free swim at the High Prairie and District Aquatic Centre from 4:45-5:45 p.m. concludes the day.

Anyone interested in registering can call Pardell at 780-523-5059 or they can register online at www.hpfd.ca.

Cost to register for the run is $25.
