High Prairie town council will consider putting aside $15,000 to mark High Prairie’s 100th year in 2010.
Council passed the motion during its Sept. 8 meeting.
Council has already set aside $19,461 in its 2009 budget for activities related to the centenary, says treasurer Hermann Minderlein.
Councillor Jeff Burgar made a report during the Sept. 8 meeting regarding the status of ideas for the event. He says the HP100 committee held a meeting Aug. 25 and about a dozen people attended.
“We don’t have volunteers for many of them,” says Burgar. “But I think some of them will happen, anyway.”
He said a list of activities was talked about and the consensus was to hold two New Year’s Eve dances, one at the beginning and the other at the end of 2010.
Another proposed activity is a street dance and barbecue on the Saturday or Sunday before the Elks Pro Rodeo at the end of July 2010. The dance and barbecue could include a High Prairie Idol contest, a battle of the bands and fight of the fiddles, a Guitar Hero/Rock Star contest and an auto shine and show.
Burgar adds many clubs and groups are interested in helping. Some have no specific plans, but others such as the High Prairie and District Museum and library are considering projects.
A permanent tourist attraction was also proposed, such as the biggest walleye, the biggest Indian headdress or the biggest handshake. Other suggestions include a time capsule, mural projects and a souvenir book of High Prairie past and present.
Burgar says, so far, there aren’t enough volunteers for all the ideas.
