A request from the Native Arts Museum in Grouard for a donation for programming, was denied by the board.

Louise Myre of the museum appeared at the meeting to ask once more for money from the division.

Trustee Gary Doran raised the question of what would happen to the program if the board kicked in money but others didn’t. Myre said she would have to take the question to her superiors.

Board chair Joyce Dvornek expressed reluctance to donate because of the tough economy and also because the museum’s programming isn’t only for school students.

The board approved a motion to send a letter supporting the museum in its endeavours.

The recent fire in Faust, which destroyed a garage and a landmark hotel, affected the school, as well, said HPSD superintendent Laura Poloz.

“The school was without power but they had water, but they ran as usual,” said Poloz.

The board gave support in principle for Prairie River School Grade 9 students to go on a proposed field trip to the Canadian Science and Technology Museum in Ottawa.

The trip, slated to take place February 11 to 14, 2010, would involve about 60 students.

“As proposed, they’d be missing two days of school,” said superintendent Laura Poloz.

The focus of the trip would be science and mathematics, said Poloz. She said language arts would be achieved by having the students write in journals each day, social studies would be covered via a visit to Parliament, and math would be dealt with through two 40-minute teaching sessions.

The next step will involve notifying parents and students and then meeting to look at the itinereary, curriculum compoentns and fundraising possibilities.
