E.W. Pratt High School student Quintin Guttinger made a very respectable showing at the Alberta Schools Athletic Association High School Golf Championships in Lacombe Sept. 28-29.
Guttinger fired 18-hole scores of 86-84-170 to place 48th out of 113 golfers.
The tournament was held at the Lacombe Golf and Country Club the first day before shifting venues to the Alberta Springs Golf Course in Red Deer the second day.
The first day was cold and windy with the sun shining the second day.
Guttinger, a Grade 11 student, qualified on the Pratt golf team, then advanced from the zone tournament to provincials.
Some early double bogeys and bogeys put Guttinger out of contention the first day after he found himself 11 shots back of three co-leaders at 75. One of them, Evan Cowan of Lethbridge Catholic Central High School, shot 71 the second day to win by three shots with 149.
One of the big stories of the tournament was Cole Chelle or Edmonton Harry Ainlay High School. He shot 83 the first day and was eight shots back but he rebounded to shoot a very impressive 66 the second day to place second.
Guttinger will surely be back next year to do better. He is one of the elite high school golfers in the Peace Country and has won several junior tournaments and placed well in men’s flights at other open tournament this year.
Guttinger is the son of Rick and Norman Guttinger of High Prairie. Vic Shapka coaches the Pratt golf team.
