Hazel Larson received a big surprise when she dug this beet from Phyllis Riddle’s garden Oct. 7. Larson
weighed it at Freson IGA and learned it was 1.75 lbs. or .795 kg. Riddle wasn’t surprised about its weight.
She has also grown big carrots this year.

Take my money, earn my contempt
This tale begins in March 2009 at a public meeting which I was not officially notified, but learned of through
the moccasin telegraph. Here, a municipal district official, slouching like a bored teenager in front of some 30
or so ratepayers, proposed a local improvement levy on the Burger property in Faust of up to $200,000. When
I indignantly questioned his sanity, he flippantly replied, “The last time I looked it was still a democracy.”

Shelley Griffiths and Carol Fenn-Radcliffe
The High Prairie Play Program Association is alive and well this year. After re-organizing early this fall,
two women were hired to run the program. Shelley Griffiths, left, is no stranger to High Prairie and area and is
currently raising her family here. Carol Fenn-Radcliffe, is the head instructor. She decided to lead the program
after hearing of its demise because she knows – as a certified teacher – its importance. “It’d be a great loss
to the community,”
Darlene Dube
Darlene Dube has made it a lifelong passion to help people so it was no surprise to many she joined the
High Prairie and Area Victim Services Society as its assistant coordinator.
Grant Halverson
Grant Halverson is a new mechanic at Charrois Motor Products. He started there June 1, 2009 and has been
in the field for five years. “It’s something I was always good at. I’ve been working on stuff like farm equipment
and vehicles since I was a kid.”
Adrian Wong
Adrian Wong is a new sales consultant for Big Lakes Dodge, starting in early September 2009. He has a
diploma in electronics from NAIT and a diploma in computer technology from SAIT. Wong ran his own
computer business in High Prairie and developed medical software for a software company in St. Albert.
Michael Smith
Michael Smith is a new sales consultant at Big Lakes Dodge, starting Sept. 22. The learning curve is steep,
but he enjoys it. Being a sales consultant appeals to Smith because of his background in nursing and as the
owner of The Park Theatre.
Jonathan Mercer
Jonathan Mercer loves vehicles so much he is training to be an automotive service technician and wants to
establish his own stock car racing team. Mercer and his girlfriend, Alyssa Bramley, who works at Leonarda’s
Beauty Salon, moved to High Prairie for the employment opportunities. Mercer is a third-year apprentice and
works at Big Lakes Dodge and is completing his education at Fairview College in Fairview.

‘Time’ to donate!
Colton Young, a Grade 12 student at E.W. Pratt High School, holds a Ducks Unlimited clock. Young is one
of several students volunteering to help Tammy Kaleta get Ducks Unlimited merchandise ready for the annual
banquet at the Pomeroy Inn and Suites Nov. 7.

The only game last week was postponed when the referees did not attend the game in Fairview. Who was at
fault was not known at press time. Spirit River also requested a year’s leave of absence so the NPHL schedule
will be adjusted this week. Not a great start to the season. David Temple sets the lines.

Student shares traditional methods of making meat
I’m writing about the process of making dry meat with my family. First of all, my uncles and my cousins
usually go hunting every fall. When they get a moose, they skin and quarter the meat in the bush. Then they
take it to my grandparent’s house. It is hung in the smokehouse for a day or so for the excess blood to dry out.

Many people already know Norma Noskey. She has been a bus driver for six years.
Now, Noskey has a new important job at our school. Her new responsibility is working with When We Are
Healthy. She is a youth success coach. Some of the ways she can help the students are: giving extra support,
positive life choices, promote education, and student wellness. Noskey stated she enjoys working with the
students and seeing their smiles everyday.

Theresa Doody’s Grade 3 class has two interesting lizards named Lizzy and Freddy.
Grade 4 Proverbs
Students in Grade 4 were asked to finish the following sentence: Tomorrow is. . .. “Thursday!” “A special day!”

What’s Up in Grade 6?
The Grade 6 class has been very busy so far this fall. They have just finished a unit on Mental Math and now
are starting a new unit on adding and subtracting super numbers.

The High Prairie RCMP is requesting assistance from the public to provide any information regarding the
following crime. Between May 4-18, an unknown number of individuals committed a break and enter at a
residence on 56 Ave. and stole an undisclosed amount of cash, a grey coat and a black sword, that is
approximately two feet long with gold striping.
