Bottle Stop also offers oil, battery recycling options

Those wishing to recycle their used motor oil and batteries need look no further than the recycling facility at the Bottle Stop.

“People should bring in their used oil and batteries to reduce (the risk of) contamination at public waste facilities,” says manager Rick Quartly.

The facility is in a separate building next to the Bottle Stop and is managed by Danny McDermott. It has a 3,000-litre tank which meets provincial government regulations. The facility also accepts used oil filters as well as four- and 20-litre pails.

Councillor James Waikle, a member of the District Waste Management Authority and Northern CARE, encourages do-it-yourself oil changers to use the available facilities.

The UFA gas bar accepts used oil from their members, while Fountain Tire accepts it from the public. Fountain Tire, Charrois Motor Products and Monahan Ford Kawasaki recycling their oil and have a private company take it way for processing.

Big Lakes Dodge continues to recycle their oil, but they recently installed an oil burner to heat their service bays.

“It will help recover heat loss,” says owner Chris Semple. “It will get the shop warmer and faster without additional costs.”

It is a Clean Burn oil burner designed specifically for used oil and is environmentally friendly by eliminating black, sooty smoke.

The Clean Burn Energy Systems website touts its product as a money saver and by eliminating the need to transport used oil on highways, it also reduces the risk of spills and contamination to the environment.

The oil recycling facility at the Bottle Stop also accepts used batteries. Quartly supports a refundable deposit for batteries, such as the one imposed for plastic milk containers by the provincial government June 1, 2009.

Waikle says a refundable deposit should be considered. He also says the provincial government is reviewing environmental fees such as the tire tax, proposing to increase it from $5 to $5.50 per tire.
